The Visibility Score tells you how prominently and consistently your brand appears in AI-generated search results, like Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT answers, or Perplexity summaries.
It’s calculated based on two things:
Detection Rate: How often your brand appears in test runs.
Rank Score: How well your brand ranks on average when it does appear
The Formula:
Visibility Score = (Detection Rate × Rank Score × 100), rounded to 1 decimal place
Let’s break it down:
Detection Rate (0 to 1):
This is the percentage of runs in which your brand is detected. For example: If your brand appears in 80 out of 100 test runs, your detection rate is 0.8
Rank Score:
This score rewards higher (better) rankings. It’s calculated using this formula:
Rank Score = 1 / (1 + 0.1 × (Average Rank - 1))
The lower your average rank, the higher your score.
A brand that consistently ranks #1 will score higher than one ranking #5
Example:
Let’s say:
Your brand appears in 80% of test runs → Detection Rate = 0.8
Your brand’s average rank across those runs is 2
Now plug into the formulas:
Rank Score = 1 / (1 + 0.1 × (2 - 1))
→ 1 / (1 + 0.1) = 0.909
Visibility Score = 0.8 × 0.909 × 100 = 72.7
So, your Visibility Score is 72.7.
This tells you: “Your brand appears most of the time and ranks pretty well, so your visibility is strong!”
