Adding & Editing Keywords

Getting started with rank tracking on Keyword.com

Updated over a week ago

Keywords are added to a project, so you first need to either create a new project, or navigate to an exiting project. Once you are in the project view, click on + Add Keywords

Tracking the URL / Domain

Track Broad Domain or Exact URL

When adding a keyword you will need to choose if you want to track the entire domain, including all sub-domains and page (Broad Domain) or a specific page (Exact URL).

If you select Exact URL you will only see results for that exact URL. If you select Broad Domain, we will report back the first ranking URL in the domain.

Tracking a URL that is an IP address

There may be cases where you are tracking a URL that is listed as an IP address. For example, https://192.522.32.55/mobile_tracking

If the URL is an IP address, when accessing Spyglass we replace all IP addresses on the page with 127.0.0.1 — This does not affect the ranking data for that keyword as it is simply a mask to cover the original IP address in Spyglass.

Adding a URL with encoded characters

If you are tracking a link with an encoded hex character e.g. cl.linkedin.com/in/nicolás-palacios-52528a21/ , and after adding the keyword it display an anomalous link or simply has no ranking. Follow these steps to troubleshoot.

  • Before adding the keyword, go to your browser and navigate to the page you want to track. Then copy the link address.

  • For example: cl.linkedin.com/in/nicol%C3%A1s-palacios-52528a21

  • Then paste the URL select Exact URL

HTTP and HTTPs

Keyword.com will pick up both HTTP and HTTPs versions automatically so there is no further action required to track this.

If Google has not indexed the HTTPs version yet, we would pick up and return the HTTP version. This will automatically be corrected once the HTTPs version is indexed.

If the keyword is unranked, we will also default to showing the HTTP version of the URL.

Adding Tags on Keywords

Tags can be used to categorize any number of keywords in a project or group. a keyword can have multiple tags linked to it. (possible usage: group keywords with a region or some kind of priority).

Tags can be added to keywords at any time. If you have an existing keyword and you want to add, edit or delete tags, simply navigate to the keyword, select it and click Manage Tags in the keyword action bar.

To add tags, type the name and click Apply

Keyword character limits

There is currently a limit of 150 bytes (characters) when adding keywords to be tracked.

It is important to note that when tracking keywords in foreign characters, the visual number of characters that you see is not the true character count after the keyword is added to the database after UTF-8 encoding.

For example

Visual character count (including spaces)

Character count after encoding

To calculate how many bytes your keyword is, you can use this online tool.

Bulk Importer

Multiple domains/keywords can be added in using the "Bulk Importer" feature. Once this option is turned on, you can add in your domains/keywords in the format "domain.com:keyword:tag" (one per line).

You may choose not to include tags as this part is optional.

Track Specific Google Region, Language or Location

You can select to track a specific Google region and language for your keyword. The default region and language are 'google.com' and 'en' (English).

By entering a specific location we will track that keyword for that location only. Read more about this here

Note: If you are tracking a keyword in a specific region, for example google.co.uk, and you do not enter a specific location, the ranking results will be based on the capital city of that region. So in the example, google.co.uk, if there is no location set, the ranking results will be based on the city "London".

Tracking Mobile & Google Mobile AMP Tracking

You can choose to track the SERPS on mobile, desktop or mobile + desktop. By default it is set to desktop SERPs.

AMP accelerated page tracking is supported by Keyword.com's mobile tracking and will work automatically.

Unwanted Duplicate URLs

Keyword.com will filter out duplicates automatically. If you are seeing duplicate URL/keyword combinations it may be because you have added some keywords with the ‘exact’ option for a specific page and others without 'exact' on the broad domain.

The system may have found the same URL ranking on the keywords without the 'exact' option as the duplicate keywords where you are tracking an exact page.

You may choose to keep both entries, as the one without 'exact' may see a change of ranking URL if another page on the domain rises higher in the rankings.

Editing Keywords after they are added

To edit a keyword, simply click on it to select it. A blue settings drawer will open from the bottom. Here you should click 'Edit'.

A panel will open where you can Update the URL, Region, Language, and Local Keyword Settings. You can do this on multiple keywords at once. Click done to save your changes!

Pro tip: You can select a range of keywords by selecting one, holding shift then selecting another. All the keywords in the range will now be selected!
